How do my ducks get in the water?

Let’s tag! A few days prior to the Duck Derby, volunteers will place numbered tags on the bottom of every duck that will be in the race – which is 5,000! The tags are waterproof labels beginning with a 7 digit number and ending with a 7 digit number.

For example:

7390001 – 7395000

How does it work?

Everyone who adopts a duck, whether online, in the mail, at a Duck Derby booth or in a sponsoring business is entered into what we call Equack, a database that stores all of the information. Next to your name in Equack is the number of ducks you have adopted. The tag range is entered into Equack and all of the numbers are shuffled up. Then, Equack automatically assigns the number of ducks you have adopted next to tag numbers. If you adopt 6 ducks, your name will be placed next to 6 different tag numbers.

Who does the Houston Duck Race benefit?

Proceeds from the Houston Duck Derby benefit Grace Christian Academy, a Christ-centered, college preparatory school for preschoolers through twelfth grade. Our mission is to prepare students to become deeply-rooted life-long learners, proficient communicators, and godly individuals capable and equipped to live lives that honor Christ even in the midst of cultures that are resistant to the biblical truth. Please visit our website for more information about our school.

What if you have 4,000 adopted ducks but you have 5,000 tagged ducks?

If all of our ducks have not been adopted by duck race day, it means that a lucky adopter can still adopt an hour prior to the Duck Derby. Their names will be placed at random into the mix, next to a number that does not already have a name by it. Anyone can adopt right up until the race begins, as long as the race is not sold out.

How will I know if my duck wins?

Grace Christian Academy will contact you using the information you provided with your duck adoption. You do not need to be present to win.

Are they real ducks or rubber ducks?

Rubber ducks, silly!

Once I adopt a duck, do I get to keep it?

After you adopt your duck, Grace Christian Academy will work hard to train, coach and make sure each one is ready for race day. After the race, all of the ducks will fly off to their next race somewhere in the U.S.

Do I need to be present to win?

The winner does not need to be present to win. We do hope that you will join us for the festivities though!

Is there an admission fee for the Houston Duck Race?

No, the race is open to the public and will be held at Grace Christian Academy located at 14325 Crescent Landing in Houston, Texas.
